Since discovering the wonders of the Northumberland coastline it has remained one of my favourite coastal regions anywhere in the UK. From the Scottish Borders right down to Newcastle is a photographers dream... clean sandy beaches, rocky shores, historic castles, lighthouses, beach huts, jetty's, causeways, islands, etc, etc, etc.
Although the course is based around general landscape photography we will have plenty of opportunity to learn about, capture and process long exposure images for any students who are interested. If interested in long exposure techniques but don't already have the relevant neutral density filters, I am normally able to supply these for the duration of the course by prior arrangement. If not arranged in advance I may not have the correct filter size for your specific lens.
By playing the weather wisely there will also be plenty of opportunity for our digital darkroom workshops with all computing equipment provided as part of the course.
The usual meeting point is at our accommodation but if anyone has transport issues I can normally offer a lift from the central belt. (Falkirk Area)
Sample Schedule (times may vary depending on time of year)
Fixed start and end times for the courses are impossible to advise in advance as this depends so much on time of year and specific accommodation guidelines. As a rough estimate most courses meet late afternoon on the arrival day and depart late morning/early afternoon on the final day. Specific times and location, etc will be advised to students prior to course commencement.
During the course itself we don't have any set hours but prefer to maximise shooting and post processing opportunities taking into account weather, time of year, tides, location, etc.
Camera with suitable lens
Outdoor clothes to suit our location (possibly waterproof boots/gators or wellies)
Not Required but will help:-
ND filter or grads
Northumberland, also called Northumbria is often referred to as 'The Best Kept Secret' in England, it is the most northerly county and covers an area of some 1935 square miles. Adjacent to the Scottish Borders and the North Sea, the 100 mile long Northumberland Coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This was designated in 1958 and covers 39 miles of coast from Berwick to the Coquet estuary. Within this stretch of coastline is some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country much of which is unpopulated, tranquil, with mile-after-mile of clean and safe award-winning golden sandy beaches, quiet country lanes and an unequalled sense of freedom.
The Northumberland Coast has much to offer all visitors including photographers, holiday makers, wildlife enthusiasts, etc and includes... Dramatic Castles (including Holy Island Castle, Bamburgh Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle), traditional seaside towns, charming villages, sandy beaches and rocky outcrops. For photographers the castles, beaches and seaside towns offer great images. For lovers of wildlife, the majestic Holy Island, the Farne Islands and Coquet Island are amongst the best spots. For all holiday makers there are many Interesting shops, markets, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and quaint pubs dotted along this lovely coast. A very popular holiday location and an ideal setting for a photography workshop.
